The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Utah (A Photographer’s Honest Take)

Every season in Utah is beautiful. But they’re not all equal for weddings.

After photographing over 200 weddings across Utah—from snowy January ceremonies to scorching July receptions—I’ve developed strong opinions about when to get married here.

This isn’t a generic “spring is pretty, fall is colorful” guide. This is the honest breakdown from someone who’s been at every type of Utah wedding, in every type of Utah weather.

The Short Answer

Best overall: Late September through October, and May through early June

Best for photos: October and May (golden light, comfortable temperatures, stunning scenery)

Best for budget: January through March, and November through December (excluding holidays)

Most popular (book early): June, September, October

Season by Season Breakdown

Spring (March – May)

The good:

  • Wildflowers start blooming in April and May
  • Temperatures are comfortable (60-75°F)
  • Green landscapes after winter
  • Less competition for popular venues
  • Beautiful soft light

The challenges:

  • March and early April can still be cold and unpredictable
  • Wind is common in spring
  • Mud season at outdoor venues (March-April)
  • Rain is possible

Best months: May and early June

Photographer’s take: May is one of my favorite months to shoot. The light is soft, the temperatures are perfect, and everything is green and blooming. If you want outdoor photos without the summer heat, May is your month.

Summer (June – August)

The good:

  • Long days mean more shooting time
  • Sunset is late (8-9 PM), perfect for golden hour portraits
  • Warm temperatures for outdoor ceremonies
  • Peak wedding season energy

The challenges:

  • Heat can be intense (90-100°F+ in July and August)
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common (especially July)
  • Most popular season—venues and vendors book fast
  • Higher pricing for popular dates

Best months: June and early July (before the heat peaks)

Photographer’s take: Summer weddings are beautiful but require planning. Schedule outdoor ceremonies for early morning or evening. Build in shade and hydration for guests. And always have a weather backup plan for afternoon thunderstorms.

Fall (September – November)

The good:

  • Stunning fall foliage (peak color: late September through October)
  • Comfortable temperatures (55-75°F)
  • Golden light that photographers dream about
  • Harvest aesthetic is naturally beautiful
  • Still warm enough for outdoor ceremonies

The challenges:

  • October is the most popular month—book 12-18 months in advance
  • Temperatures drop quickly after sunset
  • November can be cold and unpredictable

Best months: Late September and October

Photographer’s take: October is my absolute favorite month to shoot in Utah. The aspen trees turn gold, the light is warm and dramatic, and the temperatures are perfect. If you can get an October date, take it.

Winter (December – February)

The good:

  • Snowy landscapes are magical and unique
  • Less competition for venues and vendors
  • Lower pricing on popular dates
  • Intimate, cozy atmosphere
  • Unique photos that stand out

The challenges:

  • Cold temperatures require planning (heated tents, indoor venues)
  • Shorter days mean less shooting time
  • Travel can be difficult for guests
  • Limited outdoor options

Best months: December (holiday magic) and February (Valentine’s season)

Photographer’s take: Winter weddings are underrated. A snowy Utah landscape is stunning, and the intimate atmosphere of a winter wedding is something special. If you’re open to it, you can get incredible photos and significant savings.

What Affects Your Decision

Guest Considerations

  • Out-of-town guests: Spring and fall are easiest for travel
  • Elderly guests: Avoid extreme heat and cold
  • Guests with kids: Summer works well for school schedules

Venue Considerations

  • Outdoor venues: Spring and fall are ideal
  • Indoor venues: Any season works
  • Mountain venues: Summer and early fall (before snow)
  • Desert venues: Spring and fall (avoid summer heat)

Budget Considerations

  • Peak season (June, September, October): Higher pricing, less availability
  • Off-peak (January-March, November): Lower pricing, more flexibility
  • Shoulder season (April-May, July-August): Middle ground

Photography Considerations

  • Best light: October and May
  • Most dramatic scenery: October (fall color) and May (wildflowers)
  • Longest shooting days: June and July
  • Most unique photos: Winter (snow) or October (fall color)

My Personal Recommendation

If you have flexibility on your date, here’s what I’d suggest:

For the best overall experience: Late September or October. The weather is perfect, the scenery is stunning, and the light is incredible.

For the best value: January through March. You’ll save money, have more vendor availability, and potentially get a snowy landscape that makes for unique photos.

For the most flexibility: May. The weather is comfortable, the scenery is beautiful, and it’s before the peak summer rush.

One More Thing

Whatever season you choose, book early.

Utah’s wedding industry is growing fast. Popular venues and photographers book 12-18 months in advance for peak season dates. If you have a specific date or venue in mind, don’t wait.

Final Thoughts

There’s no wrong time to get married in Utah. Every season has its beauty and its challenges.

The best time is the one that works for you—your schedule, your guests, your budget, and your vision.

Whatever you choose, I’ll be there to capture it beautifully.
