5 Signs You’ve Found the Right Wedding Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your wedding day.

But it’s also one of the hardest. There are so many talented photographers out there, and it can feel impossible to know if you’ve found the right one.

After photographing over 200 weddings and talking to hundreds of couples, I’ve noticed a pattern. The couples who end up with photos they love—and a wedding day they actually enjoyed—all describe the same feeling when they found their photographer.

Here are the 5 signs you’ve found the right one.

Sign 1: You Love Their Work Without Reservation

Not “I like their work.” Not “their work is pretty good.” You love it.

When you look at their portfolio, you should feel something. The photos should make you emotional, excited, or inspired. You should look at their galleries and think: “I want my wedding to look like this.”

What to look for:

  • Full galleries, not just highlight reels
  • Consistency across different lighting conditions and venues
  • Moments that feel real, not staged
  • An editing style you genuinely love

Red flag: You like their work but have reservations. “Their photos are nice, but…” Trust that instinct. Keep looking.

Sign 2: You Feel Comfortable with Them Immediately

Your photographer will be with you for 8-12 hours on your wedding day. More than your planner. More than most family members.

You should feel comfortable with them from the first conversation.

What this feels like:

  • The consultation feels like talking to a friend, not a vendor
  • You’re not performing or trying to impress them
  • They ask about you, not just about the wedding
  • You leave the conversation feeling excited, not relieved it’s over

Why this matters: Comfort shows up in photos. When you’re relaxed around your photographer, you look relaxed in your photos. When you’re not, you don’t.

Red flag: The consultation feels like a sales pitch. You feel like a transaction, not a person.

Sign 3: They Ask the Right Questions

A great photographer is curious about you—not just your wedding details.

The questions that matter:

  • “How did you two meet?”
  • “What’s most important to you about your wedding day?”
  • “What do you want to feel when you look at your photos in 20 years?”
  • “Is there anything about being photographed that makes you nervous?”

Why this matters: A photographer who understands you as a couple can capture you authentically. A photographer who only knows your venue and timeline can only capture logistics.

Red flag: The consultation is all about packages and pricing. They never ask about your story.

Sign 4: Their Process Is Clear and Organized

Great photographers have systems. They’ve done this hundreds of times, and it shows.

Signs of an organized photographer:

  • They send a clear contract with everything in writing
  • They have a defined process for timeline planning
  • They communicate proactively, not just when you reach out
  • They have backup equipment and contingency plans
  • They can answer your questions confidently and specifically

Why this matters: An organized photographer keeps your day running smoothly. A disorganized one creates stress.

Red flag: Vague answers to specific questions. “We’ll figure it out on the day” is not a plan.

Sign 5: You Trust Them

This is the big one. And it’s the hardest to define.

Trust is the feeling that this person will show up, do their job beautifully, and handle whatever comes up. That they care about your day as much as you do. That you don’t have to worry about the photography because it’s in good hands.

How to build trust before booking:

  • Read detailed reviews from past couples
  • Ask to see full galleries (not just highlights)
  • Notice how they handle your questions and concerns
  • Pay attention to how they communicate—responsiveness and warmth matter

Why this matters: When you trust your photographer, you can let go. You can be present on your wedding day instead of worrying about whether the photos are being captured. That presence shows up in your photos.

Red flag: Something feels off and you can’t explain it. Trust that feeling.

The Bonus Sign: They’re Excited About Your Wedding

The best photographers aren’t just doing a job. They’re genuinely excited about your specific wedding.

When you describe your venue, your vision, your love story—do their eyes light up? Do they ask follow-up questions? Do they share ideas and get enthusiastic?

That excitement translates into photos. A photographer who’s genuinely invested in your day will go above and beyond to capture it beautifully.

What to Do When You’ve Found the Right One

Book quickly. Great photographers book up 12-18 months in advance for peak season dates. If you’ve found someone you love, don’t wait.

Trust the process. Once you’ve booked, let go of the worry. You’ve made a great decision. Now focus on enjoying your engagement.

Communicate openly. Share your vision, your concerns, your priorities. The more your photographer knows about you, the better they can serve you.

A Note from Me

I want every couple I work with to feel all five of these things when they book with me.

I want you to love my work without reservation. I want you to feel comfortable with me from our first conversation. I want to ask the right questions and have a clear, organized process. And more than anything, I want you to trust me with your wedding day.

If you’re not feeling all five of those things, keep looking. The right photographer is out there.

And if you are feeling them? Let’s talk.

Our photography collections start at $2,200, and most couples invest $3,000–$5,000 for full-day coverage.
